Best ATV for Women: Looking at the Market’s Top 3 Choices

Whenever you are looking for a new ATV, you need to think about the user. Will it be an experienced rider that loves speed? Or a beginner that needs more stability? If you are purchasing your first ATV for women, here is what I recommend you keep in mind before making your decision.

Women’s ATVs must be light, easy to steer and have a smaller frame. Therefore, the best ATV for women is the 2021 Yamaha Kodiak 450 since it provides stability, versatility, and a decent top speed of 55mph. You can easily adapt to the riding style of this off-road vehicle since it has an Ultramatic CVT, KYB nitrogen shock absorbers, and the optional power steering feature. Two great alternatives depending on your level of experience and budget are the Honda 250EX and Polaris Scrambler XP 1000.

If you want to learn more about what makes these three quads great options for women riders, keep on reading my full review. I will talk through my thought process and the features that best accommodate a woman behind the handlebar.

Top 3 ATV for Women

Throughout my years of off-road riding, I had the pleasure of sharing trails with multiple adventurous women. I always took note of the ATVs they were riding and the reason why they chose their 4-wheeler. I even helped a few women in my life get their own quad that they ended up loving, so I have a good grasp on the purchase criteria for a woman ATV.

Whether you are shopping for a present or for yourself, here is what I recommend you look at: automatic transmission, available 2WD drive, small frame, and lower weight. An ATV that meets all of these requirements will be far easier to steer and control by a woman, especially if she is a beginner.

Since not every woman is the same, I decided to include in my list three quads with various engine capacities. This way, based on your experience and your goal, you can choose the best option for you.

2021 Yamaha Kodiak 450: The Perfect Mid-Size Woman Quad

Yamaha is a brand with experience, mainly known for their sport quads that set global records of speed. At the same time, a large number of off-roaders believe Yamaha to be the most reliable ATV brand on the market. Even though that is a long and convoluted conversation to have, I have to agree that the Yamaha Kodiak 450 is a great quad that is well worth the money.

This ATV comes with a liquid-cooled 421cc engine, which is a great size both for power and stability. I believe this engine size to be perfect both for beginners and experienced riders that are not looking for excessive speed. Yamaha designed this engine to work best at low speeds, equipping it with special exhaust valves for better airflow. Learning on this machine will be a breeze since it works well at slow speeds, has automatic transmission, and even a switchable drive system between 2WD and 4WD.

I have to admit that this ATV is not the smallest or the lightest quad on the market. The Kodiak 450 has a wheelbase of 48.8 inches, with a length of 80 inches. The total weight of this woman ATV is 637 pounds. However, since it is so easy to steer and has a short turning radius, the build does not become a burden on the rider.

Other notable features of this 2021 quad are the independent double wishbone rear and front suspensions, so the ATV provides a comfortable ride even in the muddiest terrains. I appreciate that Yamaha offers the option of power steering on their new Kodiak making the maneuvering of this quad even more simple.

The selling price for the 2021 Yamaha Kodiak 450 is $6,299 with an additional $1,000 for power steering installation. This is a budget-friendly quad with automatic transmission, great suspension, and an impressive top speed of 55mph. This is a good ATV for women, both in terms of features and reliability.

2021 Honda TRX250X: The Complete Beginner Woman ATV

There are quite a few off-roaders out there that remember learning to ride on a Honda 250EX. This model that was popular in the 90s was the perfect quad for young riders and complete beginners to get accustomed to the sport. Nowadays, Honda makes an updated version of this model called the 2021 Honda TRX250X. This newer ATV is equipped with current technology, but is still popular for the same reason: maneuverability.

The TRX250X is equipped with an air-cooled 229cc engine, which can produce impressive top speeds of up to 50mph. This means that even when you get past the learning curve, you can have a ton of fun riding your Honda on the local trails.

It has electric ignition and starter, and a unique SportClutch perfect for beginners. This new clutch imitates manual ATVs, but it gets rid of any stalling. Yet another reason why the Honda TRX250X is a great quad for learning.

Honda equipped their 2021 ATV with independent double-wishbone front suspension and a swingarm with single-shock rear suspension. The ride on this girl ATV is fairly smooth, as long as you do not take it on the steepest hills and rockiest trails out there. Compared to the Yamaha Kodiak 450, the Honda model is much smaller, featuring a wheelbase of 44.8 inches and a length of 68.5 inches.

You can purchase the newest 250cc Honda quad at the price of $5,049, making it the cheapest ATV for women on today’s list.

Since you are looking for the best ATV for women, this probably means that you are a beginner. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there!

2020 Polaris Scrambler XP 1000 S: The Daredevil Woman Quad

If this is not your first time on an ATV, but you still want a reliable quad known for its comfort and stability, then I recommend checking out the 2020 Polaris Scrambler XP 1000 S. This model is a beast on the trails, being equipped with a 952cc Parallel Twin engine that has 89 horsepower. Who says that speed is just for men? This bad boy can reach up to 78mph, but still provides easy steering for people with smaller frames.

Even though Polaris has a lot of great quads on their roster, I chose this 2020 model because it has selectable driveline 2WD/4WD, CVT transmission type, and Electronic Power Steering. All of these features make the Scrambler one of the easiest to control full-size quads on the market. Equipped with the classic Independent Double A-Arm suspension that we know and love from Polaris quads, you can expect a smooth ride on difficult terrains such as sand and mud.

This is the largest quad on our list, with 82.5 inches length and a wheelbase of 57.4 inches. Even though I mentioned a smaller frame is desirable, if you want speed you will need to compromise on size as well. The 2020 Polaris Scrambler is priced around $15,399, making it the most expensive quad on our list.

What is a good ATV for a beginner?

Beginner off-roaders will be excited to try out the thrilling speeds of a sport ATV, but I recommend you start out with a smaller engine first. The reason why is because you need to get accustomed to the steering and controlling of the quad first. If you have no experience riding 4-wheelers, it is best to choose a 250cc or 300cc quad first.

In case you are buying this ATV for a child, then I suggest you take a look at this article that shows the smallest four-wheelers on the market. As a general rule, children and teens should get an ATV with a 50cc to 125cc engine, with additional safety precautions such as a speed limiter and wireless remote control.

On today’s list, the best option for a beginner woman rider is the Honda TRX250X that is designed for slower speeds, maneuverability, and easy steering. Since it can reach top speeds of up to 50mph, the TRX250X will be a trusty partner for adventures as well. Other alternatives to this 2021 Honda 250cc quad is the Can-Am DS 250 and Yamaha Raptor 250 ATVs.

What should Women Wear in Four Wheeling?

There is no difference between the necessary off-roading gear between men and women. When you are four wheeling, you should always have: a helmet, gloves, goggles, and sturdy boots. If you want to be fully protected, consider investing in quality pants and chest protection as well. All of these safety precautions will not only protect you in case of an accident, but will give you the peace of mind necessary to enjoy your ride.

If you are just beginning to ride and do not have the budget to invest in full top-quality equipment, I would focus on the helmet and boots first, since the most often seen ATV-related injuries are on the head and ankles. That being said, I do not recommend going out on a tough trail without full protective gear.

In Summary

Women looking to start out off-roading should look for an ATV suited for their frame that features an automatic transmission and good suspension systems. Based on your level of experience, choose a quad with a smaller or bigger engine for the right amount of power. If you have the ability to do so, I recommend going out and test driving the quads in my review. This way, you can see which riding style suits your needs and wants best, and you can get the most out of your off-road experience. Personally, I believe the Yamaha Kodiak 450 is the perfect middle-of-the-road choice for women riders since it provides easy steering and great top speeds in just one package.
